Our Master of Ceremony, Jarrett Ransom, is not afraid of wrangling comedians and tasked with keeping the laughs flowing. The comedians include headliner-Gene Moore, Josh Rivedal, and Cierra Renee Miranda. Let’s kick off a change in temperature and welcome fall together.

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gene now calls Phoenix home and has been making audiences roar with laughter with up to 250 live shows per year. But what you may not know is that Gene is not only a talented comedian, but also an Army veteran.

Don’t let her diminutive stature fool you, this pistol packs a punch.  Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Cierra’s fiery punchlines have been scorching the desert’s comedy scene since 2008.  Covering everything from the idiosyncrasies of public restrooms to the mundane events of office life, this little Latina’s quick wits go unmatched.  Whether you are seeing her for five minutes or 45, her curiously cantankerous views on life, love and happiness will leave you wanting more.

Joshua Rivedal

Josh Rivedal, Comedian, Fallin into Laughter show in Sedona, AZ.

Josh is a Philadelphia-based stand-up comedian, actor, and accidental adult. His voice has appeared in national commercials for Dell, McDonald’s, Dunkin’, and Johnnie Walker, proving that even if you don’t recognize his face, you’ve probably heard him trying to sell you something. He’s also the author of six books, has toured internationally performing his one-man show, and somehow still finds enough material in everyday life to complain about on stage. Join the Arts Academy of Sedona for an uncommon Halloween event. It’s two events in one…a comedy show and dance party.

The evening begins at 7:00pm with a comedy show featuring Aaron Foster. Once you get to laughing, you’ll want to stick around for the masquerade dance party lead by Sedona’s incomparable D.J. Nathan Quinn. Masquerade starts at 9:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm. Light appetizers and beverages will be provided.

AARON FOSTER COMEDY:

Growing up with a bipolar father and a schizophrenic brother left Aaron Foster with a combination of survivor’s guilt, depression and anxiety that has invalidated his every accomplishment, destroyed his every relationship and invaded his every waking thought. A comedy!

“Mostly Jokes” was named “Best Solo Show” at the Tucson Fringe Festival in January and has received reviews such as: “A laugh every twenty seconds.” “I’ve never laughed so hard about mental health.” “Subversively hilarious, laugh out loud gallows humor.”

Foster is the former host of HGTV’s FreeStyle who turned to standup to manage his depression and anxiety. He has performed at clubs all over the West Coast and has been touring this show for the past year. Some of his main influences are Mike Birbiglia, Maria Bamford, Gary Gulman, Marc Maron, Taylor Tomlinson and Neal Brennan. Do with that information what you will.

Aaron Foster the Comedian

Aaron Foster Bio:

Aaron foster is the clinically depressed former host of an HGTV show you (probably) don’t remember, has acted in numerous films you’ve (hopefully) never seen, and is a standup comic you’ve (sadly) never heard of. That being said, his uniquely hilarious take on dark topics like his own mental health (or lack thereof) has given him a unique voice in the comedy world and he regularly performs in clubs and theaters around the us and canada.

Foster’s style lies somewhere between the hilarious storytelling of mike birbiglia and the raw honesty of marc maron. His uniquely dark perspective is how he deals with the madness of, well, life.

He is currently on tour with his show “mostly jokes” that was named “best solo show” at the 2025 tucson fringe festival. It is autobiographical standup and storytelling that one reviewer called: “dark comedy with a huge heart.” Another said: “subversively funny, laugh out loud, gallows humor.” One more said: “holy shit.”

The Arts Academy of Sedona presents The American Labyrinth, a film series and retreat that looks at race and implicit bias in this country.

All three films were written, produced and directed by Dr Karmen Smith LCSW DD.

The American Labyrinth (film one)
The American Labyrinth is a love story between a mother and son as they keep their heart open amid hate. The Labyrinth is an inner journey using A Walking meditation. Ii incorporates movement with silence where we become energized by our intention as we move to Release, Receive, and Return a new. Our Sacred space is found within, and from here we navigate our journey. SETTING AN INTENTION My intention “The freedom of all from the trauma of systemic racism and implicit bias by awakening to our Oneness with love and Joy.” IMPLICIT BIAS Is a form of bias that occurs automatically and nevertheless affects beliefs, judgments, decisions, and behaviors. The American Labyrinth exposes the fear that causes systemic racism and the Love that is squelched intentionally by hate. Hate will not close my heart, and I will win if I choose to LOVE.

The American Labyrinth II: Smudging (film two)
The American Labyrinth II Smudging asks the question How do we cleanse ourselves from our fear-based programming. The film shows how our thoughts affect the collective consciousness. How do we cleanse our world, ourselves, from our thoughts that affect our actions toward humanity?

The American Labyrinth III: Sounds of Freedom (film three)
When I first moved to Sedona, I was greeted by a beautiful woman who took me by the hand and blessed me. We happened to be in the store’s aisle at the time, but that did not stop us from making a deep heart-to-heart connection. Her name is Sakina Blue Star, a 95-year-old of Native American and Scottish heritage is a force of nature and a loving fixture in the Sedona Community. I have learned many things about her life and became obsessed with her civil rights activism in the early sixties. As she began telling me her story, I wanted to get it on film and honor her in some way while informing people of the power of her determination and the tenderness of her heart. The purpose of the American Labyrinth III – Sound of Freedom is to acknowledge the elephant in America’s living room…racism. I want to recognize the people who see it and do their part to make their voices heard. Sakina Blue Star is one of a kind, and the film highlights how brave the few are who stand up to systemic racism in America, question where it came from, and shine the light of love on it. The American Labyrinth III brings love into the healing process. It is time to heal and connect instead of separating and dividing. Be loving to yourself as we all go through the healing process of addressing America’s deepest wound… Racism. Sakina Blue Star can show us how.

The Arts Academy of Sedona and Emerson Theater Collaborative are proud to bring Driving Miss Daisy to the stage on October 4-6, 2024 at Verde Valley School’s Brady Hall. Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The place is the Deep South, the time 1948, just prior to the civil rights movement. Having recently demolished another car, Daisy Werthan, a rich, sharp-tongued Jewish widow of seventy-two, is informed by her son, Boolie, that henceforth she must rely on the services of a chauffeur. The person he hires for the job is a thoughtful, unemployed black man, Hoke, whom Miss Daisy immediately regards with disdain and who, in turn, is not impressed with his employer’s patronizing tone and, he believes, her latent prejudice. But, in a series of absorbing scenes spanning twenty-five years, the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer to, and more dependent on, each other, until, eventually, they become almost a couple. Slowly and steadily the dignified, good-natured Hoke breaks down the stern defenses of the ornery old lady, as she teaches him to read and write and, in a gesture of good will and shared concern, invites him to join her at a banquet in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. As the play ends Hoke has a final visit with Miss Daisy, now ninety-seven and confined to a nursing home, and while it is evident that a vestige of her fierce independence and sense of position still remain, it is also movingly clear that they have both come to realize they have more in common than they ever believed possible—and that times and circumstances would ever allow them to publicly admit.

Driving Miss Daisy reinforces the lesson that every stage of our life is precious and should never be taken for granted.

Alfred Uhry is the only playwright ever to win the Triple Crown: an Oscar, a Tony, and a Pulitzer Prize. He began his career as a lyric writer under contract to the late Frank Loesser. In that capacity he made his Broadway debut in 1968 with HERE’S WHERE I BELONG. He then wrote the book and lyrics for THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM and was nominated for a Tony Award. He followed that with five re-created musicals at the Goodspeed Opera House. In 1987 his first play, DRIVING MISS DAISY, opened at Playwrights Horizons Theatre in New York. It was subsequently moved to the John Houseman Theatre, where it ran for over 1300 performances. The play earned many awards, including the Outer Critics Circle Award and the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. For the film version, he won an Academy Award and the film itself was voted Best Picture of the Year. Other films include “Mystic Pizza” and “Rich in Love.” Mr. Uhry’s second play, LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO, which was commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, opened on Broadway in February 1997. It has been chosen Best Play by the American Theatre Critics Association, The Outer Critics Circle, and the Drama League, and the 1997 Tony Award. He worked on PARADE, a musical play about the Leo Frank case, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown and directed by Harold Prince. His film projects include a new adaptation of “Dodsworth” for Time Warner, “Cut Flowers” for Miramax, and “Taft,” commissioned by Morgan Freeman
